windfall (poem)

Friday, December 14th, 2007

by K. (first draft)

Last night they promised
snow, a foot deep  – just enough
to cover up the red dirt,
the shriveled potatoes whose
fishy scent hangs in the air,
slowly return to the sea, windfall apples
becoming cider beneath lost orchards
the lusty summer’s promise unearthed -
left for crows who gather in grim
funereal groupings to feast, fix
the wanderer with a shiny chastising eye.

Sleeping, the storm rattles windows
gusts through the gaps and into dreams,
drifts blankets of white to winter under,
their weight a safe den to stow away
seasons of longing, fruits that ripen
only to fall by the wayside, an
unbearable sweetness that never
had the chance to linger on your tongue.

unrequited (a poem)

unrequited

tell me a story – she says
her breath escaping,
a thousand silk petals tumbling
palely into twilight.

tell me – she says-
and I will stay until the end-
her eyes cradle the promise
like a spark, from the wind.

and your heart;
a thousand small birds taking wing
beat their way free,
leave without a sound.
