Scattered, Waiting, and Exciting Adventures

Scattered in too many directions and need to settle down and focus… I am busy carving a tiny little sparrow for a new piece. She is so sweet. She will be cast in sterling silver and be linked with sterling rolo chain, off set to the left of the necklace. I have already carved a nest pendant in which rest 2 tiny eggs and a heart – this will be in the centre of the necklace, and maybe three little gemstones will be off set on the right of the necklace – pale blue, or aquamarines? But in my mind’s eye, I am already scrambling on to the next piece…

For my we don’t write letters anymore series of pieces: vintage stamp images to be etched on small pieces of copper sheet, then riveted to sterling silver backings. The sterling silver back will be stamped with half circles along the edges to make recessed areas to mimic a stamp – the whole piece will be oxidised to bring out the detail. Each piece will have a different line of a poem engraved upon the back – likely handstamped. They will then be strung on adjustable leather thongs. I may experiment with distressing the metals a bit, and with patinas to give the illusion of age.

Also have the design for crow #1 (one for sorrow) complete, and need to start piercing it now. So. Many. Ideas.

If the process of actually creating, carving, sawing, etc. each piece weren’t so satisfying and meditative in and of itself, I would be longing for a magic wand to wave and just bring them all into existence with the merest wave of it. But that would ironically steal he magic of it, wouldn’t it? It’s all about the process that lends a piece its soul.

The Raconteurs released their new album – which I adore (well, except for one song if I must be completely honest, which it seems I must). It has been on constant play in my studio, in the car, when I am cooking dinner…I have been waiting for it for months, and was so excited that it was released so quickly. I am going to be flying out to Toronto to go and catch the show there. So excited! I got floor tickets in the pre-sale through the fan site.

I have never seen them live – it’s been so long since I have seen any band of note live, so I am extra psyched for this show. I am going to be going with my older brother, which is also so exciting for me. My brother and I have not been very good at keeping in touch over the years – and really have just sort of reconnected recently, and I am just so glad and happy to be going with him. I know we will have a blast. I will be bringing a nice thick book and showing up extra early to wait out front to make sure we end up front and centre (unless of course my brother is going to wait with me, in which case I will forgo the book for conversation!).

It will be the first time that I take a trip away from the kids though…which is a very strange feeling indeed, and kind of uncomfortable, But it is sure to be an adventure, and honestly, they seem to be very interested in it and I can’t wait to share stories of it with them, :) .
